The African-led HIV Control Working Group (HCWG) today held a strategic engagement with the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) Southern Africa Regional Coordinating Centre to advance a shared agenda on sustainable health financing across the region.
The meeting brought together representatives from both organizations to chart a roadmap for strengthening domestic health financing and enhancing collaboration on resource mobilization. Discussions focused on identifying practical approaches to ensure African countries are better equipped to finance resilient and responsive health systems amid evolving global health financing landscapes.
Both parties underscored the importance of coordinated action in mobilizing sustainable resources to safeguard progress made in the HIV response and broader public health programmes. They also emphasized that stronger partnerships between regional institutions, governments, and development partners will be critical in building long-term financial resilience for health systems.
The engagement reaffirmed the shared commitment of HCWG and Africa CDC Southern Africa to champion innovative financing solutions and policy reforms that support country ownership, reduce dependence on external funding, and strengthen health security across the continent.
As Africa continues to navigate changing donor dynamics, the collaboration marks an important step towards developing sustainable financing strategies that will help countries protect essential health services and accelerate progress towards universal health coverage.
The HCWG was represented by its Head of Secretariat, Dr. Robb Sheneberger, Dr Mumbi Chola, the working group’s Technical Lead for Strategic Information & Research, and Ms. Ina Kafunda, the HCWG’s Head of Health Policy and Law. Africa CDC Southern Africa was represented by Dr. Peter Kumpalume, the Regional Representative, and Ms. Batsirai Mbodza, the Regional Programmes Lead.
HCWG remains committed to working alongside regional and continental partners to advocate for increased domestic investment in health and to support evidence-informed policies that deliver lasting health outcomes for African communities.
