Prof. Pierre M’Pele

Elected in April 2021, member of the National Academia of Medicine, France (F.E) and he coordinates its African Working Group on Covid-19 pandemic.

Dr M’Pele became a Physician in 1982 and he obtained post doctorate degrees from the University of Paris (Epidemiology, Infectious diseases and Tropical Medicine, Nutrition and Public Health).

In Congo, while Director of the National AIDS Control Programme from 1987 to 1998, Dr. M’Pele was simultaneously Director of the National Laboratory of Public Health, head of the HIV/AIDS Treatment Center of the Teaching Hospital of Brazzaville and Special Advisor  to the Presidency of the Republic of Congo.

In 1995, Pierre M’Pele was elected President of the African Society against AIDS – a position he held until 2005.

He led several training activities in the field of Public Health and HIV/Aids on both national and international levels and worked as an international consultant for UNDP, International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, IPPF, US Government USAID, WHO and UNICEF.

From 2000 to 2004, Pierre M’Pele led the UNAIDS Inter-country Technical Support Team for West and Central Africa (25 countries) based in Abidjan (Ivory Coast), and then UNAIDS Country Director for Nigeria from 2004 to 2007.

In April 2007, he joined the World Health Organization as a Country Representative in Equatorial Guinea from 2007-2010.

He was then assigned as WHO Representative in Togo from 2010-2013. From January 2013 to October 2015 Dr M’Pele was assigned as WHO Representative to Ethiopia. From 1st November 2015 to 30th November 2016, Dr M’Pele was WHO Representative to Benin.

Pierre M’Pele is the author and co-author of numerous books and published more than 100 scholarly and scientific articles. He has been quoted by the New York Times in September 1988 about HIV/AIDS pandemic in Africa. “Quote of the day”: ‘ If there is no vaccine, it will be like a war for us ‘.

His autobiography was published in 2019 tells the story of an African doctor path: from the beginning to the end of AIDS epidemic in Africa.

Dr. M’Pele has received several scientific awards such as the 1988 Noury Lemarrié Award from the French Society of Exotic Pathology “the best young researcher of the year”.

Dr M’Pele is Commander of the French Legion of honor (1996), Knight of the Senegalese National Order of the Lion (1998), Knight of the National Order of Burkina Faso (2000), Public Health Medal of Honor and Knight of the Congolese order of merit of the Republic of Congo (1989). Dr M’Pele received in October 2015 the Medal of Health development Hero of Ethiopia and in November 2016, he received the Medal of Commander in the National order of Merit of Benin.
