Over the past year, the African-led HIV Control Working Group (HCWG) has partnered with the Georgetown University’s Center for Innovation and Global Health, the Sustainable Prevention Initiative and the Government of Malawi to bring together leaders from across the continent to strengthen dialogue on integrating and sustaining HIV prevention efforts.

Key outcomes from these efforts include the development of a widely shared policy brief and a Lancet HIV viewpoint from the Lilongwe convening, which identified strategic priorities for sustaining national HIV responses. In Kigali, the IAS 2025 pre-conference addressed the impact of funding disruptions and outlined collaborative priorities for a sustainable, resilient HIV response within health systems.

As part of our ongoing commitment to advancing sustainable, country-led HIV prevention across Africa, we are delighted to participate in the upcoming International Conference on AIDS and STIs in Africa (ICASA) 2025, to be held in Accra, Ghana, building on the momentum from our previous convenings in Lilongwe and Kigali.

The HCWG and partners will co-host a pre-conference event themed “Advancing Sustainable HIV Prevention in African Countries through Integrated, Country-Led Action,” convening African governments, multilateral partners, researchers, civil society, and community leaders to strengthen the regional dialogue on sustainable HIV prevention amid growing programme disruptions.

The HWCG’s Dr Mumbi Chola will be one of the speakers during the pre-conference side event.
