Director & CEO of Impact Research & Development Organization (IRDO) Member – African-led HIV Control Working Group (HCWG)
It is with deep shock and profound sadness that we learnt of the devastating news of the sudden passing of Dr Kawango Agot, immediately following the HCWG’s quarterly meeting in Lusaka, Zambia.
Dr Agot was not only a remarkable colleague, but also a valued member of the HCWG and an exceptional professional whose contributions to the HIV response were invaluable. She was a committed member of the HCWG from its inception in 2023 and served as the Chairperson of the HCWG HIV Prevention Thematic Group. Her sudden death leaves a void that will be deeply felt by all who had the privilege of knowing and working with her.
She was passionate about HIV research and mentored many young people and established several organisations to address the disempowerment of girls, women and communities in Kenya. Among these were the Nyanza Initiative for Girls Education & Empowerment and the East and Southern Africa Reducing HIV among Adolescents and Youth movement. We will forever cherish the time spent with her, remembering her kindness, diligence, tenacity and great sense of humour.
As we mourn this immense loss, let us also remember and honour the enduring legacy of Dr Agot’s life and work. Her passion, dedication and warmth touched many lives and will continue to inspire us. We extend our deepest sympathy and condolences to the family and everyone who knew and loved her.
May her soul rest in eternal peace.
With heartfelt condolences,
Members of the African-led HIV Control Working Group
